The University of Edinburgh is now seeking applications for the 2007-2008 academic session. The awards are open to overseas students undertaking a research degree and may be held in any field of study. Each award covers the difference between the tuition fee for a UK/EU graduate student and that chargeable to an overseas graduate student. The awards do not cover maintenance expenses. Subject to satisfactory progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years.
Eligibility
Applicants must be liable to pay tuition fees at the rate applicable to overseas students and must have already applied for admission to a full-time MPhil/PhD research programme of study or currently be pursuing such a programme. They must be of outstanding academic merit and research potential. Although candidates with an upper second class honours Bachelor`s degree (or the overseas equivalent) can be considered, in order to be competitive you should really have a first class Bachelor`s degree supplemented by an excellent Master`s degree. Other factors such as financial status, nationality and the proposed field of study are not taken into account.
The University of Edinburgh will not generally consider candidates who have already obtained a PhD, or formal equivalent, as a result of direct research training; or who are due to enter the third year of their PhD programme of study. Please also note that if you have applied for consecutive registration where you will start your Master`s programme of study in 2007 and your PhD the following year in 2008, that you will not be eligible to apply for an ORS award in 2007.
ORS awards cannot be held concurrently with fully-funded scholarships such as a Dorothy Hodgkins Postgraduate Award, Commonwealth Scholarship or a Marshall Scholarship. Students who have previously held an ORS award will not be considered eligible for a second one.
Application Procedure
Applicants should contact the College/School in which they intend to study and clarify their proposed research project. The ORS Awards Scheme is highly competitive and so if you are in any doubt whether you hold the required grades, please contact the relevant College/School before making an application. Whenever possible, applications should be typed. If you complete the application form by hand, please make sure that it is neat, tidy and legible.

Each application form must be supported by two references, and these must be attached to the application form. Application forms received without references will not be considered. The only criteria for selection are outstanding academic merit and research potential, and therefore references should be as full and informative as possible.
A completed scholarship application form and two references should be received by the College/School Office by the closing date of 1 March 2007 in order to be considered for the scholarship.
