[Canada] Jeanne Sauve Scholarships at McGill University
SAUVE SCHOLARS is an opportunity for highly-motivated people, under thirty, of demonstrated leadership potential, to come to Montreal for eight months to research, reflect, question and enlarge upon their understanding of the state of the world and their roles in effecting positive change.
McGill University, amongst the most international of North American universities, represented on campus by over 150 countries, is the home of the Program. McGill opens the doors of all its courses and resources to the SCHOLARS.
The Program itself, in addition, will provide intimate weekly seminars with eminent journalists, political figures and innovators in business, academia and the arts. SCHOLARS will be awarded a stipend valued at $30,000 Canadian for travel, tuition, housing, meals and supplies. In addition, the Program provides the costs of group excursions to academically and culturally stimulating sites in the northeastern United States, as well as adventure trips in Canada`s dramatic north.
SCHOLARS will be encouraged to produce material, during or immediately after their residence, to be published on the SAUVE SCHOLAR website, or in a hard-copy version, for world-wide dissemination and discussion. These works may take the form of written text, photo essays or videos.
As the body of work of the SCHOLARS grows, the website will become a platform for the broadest range of critical discourse amongst the emerging leaders and an ever-widening audience. The electronic media make possible creative linkages with other web vehicles for societal innovation and change.
It will be fun, it will be challenging, to be in an intellectually stimulating environment, rich in human and physical resources. But without the pressures of exams, a job, deadlines and financial responsibility. With networks enriched and expanded, horizons sharpened and refocused, it will be a year of incredible personal growth.
THE MISSION
The mission of the Jeanne Sauvé Foundation, sponsors of the SAUVE SCHOLARS, is "…to help prepare young adults of merit so that they can develop their potential and skills to be used towards making a difference and building a better future for the societies of tomorrow."
Jeanne Sauvé, the first woman Governor-General of Canada, in initially setting out the goals of the Foundation, spoke of the need to "address global issues, exchange opinions and ideas, gain insight, expand understanding and perspectives and hopefully create a network of leaders."
As a long-time, highly-respected, professional journalist in print, radio and television, she was particularly sensitive to the power of the communication arts. She spoke of the Foundation contributing to "…the betterment of society by encouraging the development of…and communication between youth, whatever their origin, with a special emphasis on study and discussion of international issues of global concern…in which the voices of youth may be heard.
THE STRATEGY
The Foundation has chosen to implement this mission by gathering in Montreal a highly-talented and motivated group of post-graduate, or equivalent, young emerging leaders, to share an experience together of inquiry, debate and reflection, to help advance their careers, intellectual capacity and, importantly, leadership potential.
ELIGIBILITY
The Program seeks highly-motivated candidates who have completed their undergraduate education, or the equivalent, but who have not necessarily attained an advanced degree. Focusing on the unrealized potential of their youth, but with a solid academic or experiential foundation, candidates should be under thirty years of age.
Candidates will be expected to have a solid academic record, and while attending university, to have taken an active role in campus life as a student organizer or leader, or have taken an active role in the community.
Successful candidates are committed leaders in their professions and in their communities. They demonstrate a track record of success, a skill for communication and an eagerness to engage with the complex issues of the day.
PPast Scholars have come from a wide range of disciplines such as journalism, communications, the arts, economics, and social and community development.
Candidates are encouraged to provide the Foundation with proof of their leadership initiatives to date through media reports or third party commentaries.

PERSONAL STATEMENTS
Two Personal Statements are required. The Personal Statements must be submitted at the same time as the Application.
The first should be a short biographical statement, about 500 words maximum, telling the admissions committee and your potential fellow Scholars something about you to present you as an asset and contributor, through lived experience or accomplishments, to the group dynamic in the shared year to come.
The second should be a short statement, about 500 words maximum, about the direction of your inquiry during your stay in Montreal, and, if pertinent, how it relates to your past experience or future personal objectives.
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Three Letters of Recommendation are required: One from your most recent or current employer, preferable someone who has directly overseen your work; one from someone who can vouch for your academic performance and credentials and has personally supervised some aspect of your studies; one from anyone not related to you, who can objectively critique your work, your thought processes, your creativity or your entrepreneurship. The letters must contain coordinates for direct referee contact. These letters must be sent directly to the program in a sealed envelope without passing through your hands.

PUBLISHED WORKS OR ACTIVITIES
Candidates are encouraged to submit copies (not originals) of representative written, photographic, audio, film, video or other graphic examples of their published work. Authorship should be clearly identified, together with a description of the publication vehicle, its audience and any critiques received. No materials will be returned. Please assure sufficient protective wrapping and postage for tapes, cassettes, CDs and other sensitive materials.
Alternatively, Candidates may submit evidence of actual societal leadership activities.
PROOF OF LEADERSHIP
Proof of a Candidate`s leadership initiatives may be provided in different ways; through media reports, third party commentaries, original creative works or any other demonstration of leadership potential.
INTERVIEWS
Candidates in certain parts of the world, where the Program has associates or collaborators nearby, may be asked to present themselves for an interview. This is not mandatory, but the more the Program learns about a candidate`s personal attributes the greater his or her chances are for admission.
DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS
The deadline for receiving the complete application package in Montreal is December 31. Candidates are notified of the Foundation`s decision in the latter part of March.
COMMENCEMENT OF THE PROGRAM
Scholars come to Montreal mid-August for a canoe and camping excursion in northern Canada, in addition to a full program of welcoming and orientation activities in Montreal.
