[UK] MSc Training Fellowship in Medical Microbiology, University College Cork
Closing Date: 31 July 2006
Title: Mechanisms, prevalence and clinical impact of multi-drug resistance in Gram-negative bacteria
The proposed MSc training project will be a collaborative study between Prof. Fergal O`Gara, Professor of Microbiology and Director of the BIOMERIT Research Centre (BRC) at University College Cork (UCC) and Dr. Jim Clair, Consultant Microbiologist at the Mercy University Hospital (MUH), Cork. Both the BRC (http://www.ucc.ie/biomerit) within the Microbiology Department at UCC and the MUH (http://www.muh.ie) have international track records in the study of microbial-host interactions and microbial virulence.
This study will help identify prevalent mechanisms of beta-lactam resistance among Gram-negative bacteria with important implications regarding the management and control of antibiotic resistant strains and help identify emerging trends of resistance mechanisms. Further information on our research programmes and on the position listed can be found on the BRC website: (http://www.ucc.ie/biomerit) and is available from Prof. Fergal O`Gara.
Applicants should have a first or upper second class Hons degree in Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry or a related discipline. The fellowship is for a duration of 18 months, with a stipend of ¤11,000 per annum. Applicants should submit a full CV and arrange to have 2 letters of reference sent to:
Fergal O`Gara, BSc PhD DSc MRIA, Professor of Microbiology and BIOMERIT Director,
BIOMERIT Research Centre, Microbiology Department, University College Cork, Ireland.
