[Japan] International Doctoral Program in Energy Science, Kyoto University
Deadline: 20 January 2006
The Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University, is offering the International Doctoral Program in Energy Science. The primary objective of the International Doctoral Program in Energy Science, Kyoto University, is to provide young students and researchers holding a Masters degree (or equivalent) with an opportunity to further their studies toward a doctoral degree at Kyoto University. In this Doctoral Program, the Japanese language is not required as the necessary four units can be obtained by choosing from the variety of courses presented in English, so a good command of English is required.
SCHOLARSHIP
Students admitted to the program will be financially supported for three years through the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship.
FUNDAMENTAL ELIGIBILITY
One who applies to join the International Doctoral Program in Energy Science, Kyoto University, must satisfy all of the following conditions:
- He/she is an eligible applicant for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship obtainable through the recommendation of a Japanese university.
- He/she is eligible to apply to join the Doctor Course of the Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University.
- He/she is a graduate of a university with which the Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University, has signed an Agreement of International Academic Exchange. (Other agreements of equivalent standing are acceptable in place of the above agreement.)
- He/she is not the holder of any doctoral level degree in principle.
- No one can apply for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship through more than one university.
COURSES AND NUMBER TO BE ADMITTED
Courses
The following departments are included in the Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University. Each applicant must choose one of them as his/her major before application.
- Socio-Environmental Energy Science
- Fundamental Energy Science
- Energy Conversion Science
- Energy Science and Technology

Number of applicants to be admitted
Eight applicants will be admitted.
ELIGIBILITY DETAILS
Nationality
Applicants must be from one of the countries with which Japan has official diplomatic relations. If the applicant has already studied at a Japanese university as a recipient of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship, three years must have passed since he/she left Japan. Students who are currently studying in Japan cannot apply to join this Program.
Age
Each applicant must be under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2006.
Academic qualifications
Each applicant must satisfy one of the following conditions by the end of September, 2006, otherwise the admission and scholarship will be cancelled.
- He/she is the holder of a masters level degree.
- He/she has been engaged in research for more than 2 years at universities or research institutes after graduation from a university or after completion of a 16-year school education, and is approved to be eligible by the Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University.
- He/she is 24 years of age or over and is approved to have an academic ability higher than or equivalent to a Masters degree by the Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University.
Physical and mental health
Each applicant must be physically and mentally healthy enough to carry out his/her studies at Kyoto University.
Language ability
Each applicant must have a good command of English.
Other conditions
- Each admitted student must arrive in Japan between October 1 and October 7, 2006.
- Applicants who are currently active soldiers will not be accepted.
- For a student couple, the Japanese Government can only offer a scholarship to one party.
- Any applicant, who is to receive a scholarship from his/her government or from any other foundation, will not be accepted as a recipient of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship
SCHOLARSHIP AND OTHER FINANCIAL SUPPORTS
The following will be offered to successful applicants.
- Stipend:
Continuing for a period of at most 36 months. The value for 2005 was 175,000 yen per month.
- Travel to and from Japan:
An economy class round trip airfare is offered between the international airport closest to the successful applicant’s home address, and Kansai International Airport. However, a return air ticket will only be offered if he/she leaves Japan immediately after the scholarship ends.
- School fees:
Successful applicants will be granted exemptions from entrance and tuition fees.
- Others:
Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) will partially reimburse medical expenses. JASSO also provides successful applicants with an arrival allowance (25,000yen) upon arrival in Japan.
SELECTION AND ADMISSION
1st stage selection
The Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University, examines the documents submitted by applicants. Selected applicants are recommended to the Japanese Government as applicants for the scholarship. Applicants will be informed of the result of this selection by around the end of April, 2006.
2nd stage selection
The Japanese Government examines the documents of the applicants recommended by Kyoto University and decides whether the applicants are acceptable as recipients of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship. Applicants will be informed of the final decision before the end of August, 2006. The Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University, will send certificates of admission to students who have been admitted to the International Doctoral Program in Energy Science at the same time.

Note:
- Among the following documents, the applicant must use the original formats as they are for items (1), (2) and (3). Before filling in the necessary matters by typewriting, make clear copies from the website on the separate sheets for items (1) and (3) and also make copies on both side of two page sheets for item (2).
- The sheets for the items (2) and (3) include some Japanese in the same meaning as the English. When the Japanese cannot be printed depending on the printers, we will send the copies of the sheets according to the request of applicant.

- Certificate of health issued within the last 2 months (download

- A copy of an official document verifying the applicant’s nationality. (This can be a photocopy of the applicant’s passport.)
- Certificates of Bachelors and Masters Degrees (or equivalents).
- Official academic records of undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Recommendation letter addressed to the president of Kyoto University written by the dean of the graduate school.
- Recommendation letter written by the supervisor, or equivalent person, at the undergraduate level and / or at the graduate level.
- Recommendation letter written by the head of the applicant’s employer (if the applicant is currently working ).
- Research plan at Kyoto University (3 pages of A4 sheets).
- List of scientific publications.
- Brief description of academic achievements (3pages of A4 sheet).
- A copy of Master Thesis (or equivalent).
- Summary of Masters Thesis (or equivalent, 3 pages of A4 sheets).
- Photograph taken within the last 6 months to be attached to (2).
- A copy of an official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test or TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) score for a test taken within the last 12 months unless the applicant’s mother tongue is English.
Note: Please use the following codes when requesting your scores be sent to the Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University:

Institution Code: 9501, Department Code: 69 for TOEFL.
All of the above documents except for (13) must be written in English, and will not be returned to the applicant.
TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE 1ST STAGE SELECTION
Each applicant should contact his/her prospective supervisor at Kyoto University through an introduction by his/her supervisor at the home university before application. This approach is highly recommended as the program is fundamentally based upon the Agreement of International Academic Exchange between the home university and Kyoto University.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE OF THE 2ND STAGE SELECTION
Kyoto University will inform applicants who have passed the 1st stage selection of the application procedure for the 2nd stage selection by the Japanese Government.
