Doctoral Programs Competitions for admission are open in the following Ph.D. Programs at IMT:
Computer Science and Engineering
The doctoral program aims at preparing researchers and professionals with a wide knowledge about the foundations of informatics and about its applications to a variety of systems and disciplines, focusing on aspects of particular importance in the present context. The new version of informatics is changing the perspective of other disciplines and several aspects of common life, and is the target of very active research in the international scene.
Economics, Markets, Institutions
The program aims at dealing with issues in political economy, applied public economics, the functioning of industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomics on productivity and growth. A distinctive feature of the Ph.D. program is the integration of theoretical, technical, and practical expertise, aimed to educate highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy. Theoretical methodologies and models are generated and tested, through the systematic investigation of the real world, with a distinctive focus on concrete observation of markets and their actors. At the end of the program, students are able to identify commonalities as well as distinctive characters of economies, markets, and industries.
In the framework of the iPLAN European project the aim of this thesis is to enhance the computational efficiency and to adjust the complexity-accuracy trade-off of the MR-FDPF (Multi-Resolution Frequency Domain Partial Flows) method for indoor radio coverage prediction. This method, particularly efficient for indoor propagation, is devoted to be implemented in a radio network planning tool. This tool needs to propose all kind of modern radio link conditions: indoor, outdoor, indoor to outdoor, outdoor to indoor, for 3G/4G, WLAN or WMAN (WiMax), from macrocells to femtocells.
Thus, the study will contain four main parts:
computational efficiency enhancement of the MR-FDPF method;
implementation of statistical analysis of radio channel behaviour rather than only considering mean power level;
integration of our indoor propagation tool into a wide areas simulation tool with other propagation methods such as ray-tracing in collaboration with other partners;
The applications for the 2010 Endeavour Awards are now open and will close on 31 July 2009.
The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government`s internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to do the same abroad. You may be able to use this information to strengthen your international networks, or simply pass it on to prospective international students seeking scholarships.

Call for applications - scholarships for MSc in Geospatial Technologies and MSc in Geoinformatics. With the support of the North-Rhine-Westphalian Ministry for Innovation, Science, Research and Technology (MIWFT), the Institute for Geoinformatics offers:
Five scholarships for the MSc program in Geoinformatics (4 semesters, start October 1, 2009)
Two partial scholarships for the MSc program in Geospatial Technologies (3 semesters, start September 4, 2009) for nationals of the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China (P.R.), Costa Rica, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Uruguay.
Within the scope of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) for Computer Aided and Image Guided Interventions (CO-ME) the Medical Image Analysis Center (MIAC) at the University of Basel is developing methods to segment facial soft tissue.
The available challenging PhD position is part of a larger multidisciplinary project in the field of cranio maxillo facial (CMF) surgery planning. The project involves both theoretical and applied research aspects, and will be performed in close collaboration with researchers of multiple Universities in Switzerland and the MR physics group at the University Hospital in Basel in particular.
The state-of-the-art methods for segmenting anatomical structures in the head for CMF surgery planning require lot of manual intervention and is a time-consuming task. The focus of this work will thus be on automising this tedious manual segmentation task as much as possible. The problem will be addressed by using a model-based segmentation approach combined with optimised MR sequences. These MR sequences are developed in close collaboration with a PhD student from the MR physics group.
