Faculty of Arts, Department of History
Political history, cultural history and global history are three main foci of the Department of History"s contemporary research programme. The section of Political History focuses on issues of nationbuilding, citizenship and political culture in its relationship to processes of signification, inclusion and exclusion. Histories of colonialism and decolonisation are important in this respect.
Research project
Within the broader context of the NWO-programme on Cultural Dynamics two PhD-posts have been formulated for the research programme Sites, Bodies and Stories. The Dynamics of Heritage Formation in Colonial and Postcolonial Indonesia and the Netherlands. These are:
Physical Anthropology, Colonial Practice and Cultural Policies;
Performing identity, Shaping Heritage – Wayang puppet theatre and the dynamics of heritage formation in contemporary Indonesia.
Civil Engineering and Geosciences
The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences provides leading, international research and education in road and water engineering, earth sciences, traffic and transport control, and delta technology. Innovation and sustainability are central themes. The research addresses global social issues and is closely interwoven with education as well as with the work carried out by a broad spectrum of knowledge institutions. The faculty consists of 17 sections distributed among the Departments of Design & Construction, Hydraulic Engineering, Transport & Planning, Water Management and Geotechnology.
The Section of Road and Railway Engineering focuses on the design, construction, management and maintenance of structures for land-based traffic, and the interaction between traffic and structures. The section has extensive laboratory facilities to perform advanced tests. Advanced mathematical tools are applied for in-depth analyses.
For students interested in discovering their potential for a research career this program offers unique opportunities to work as a junior researcher in a research project. Supervision will be provided by academic staff, working on and/or responsible for the research project. In some cases it may be possible to work on an individual research project, depending on the available resources at the chosen university and available academic supervision. Research offerings will be different in each institution: research can be done in all kinds of fields, depending on the available places and chosen university.

Several PhD scholarships are available in a newly funded ARC project for developing and applying computational/statistical methods for detection of non-coding RNAs in eukaryote genomes. This is quite a hot topic, so you will be working at the forefront of bioinformatics with leading experts in the field in Australia and internationally.
You will be supervised by Prof Peter Adams (University of Queensland), Dr Jonathan Keith (Queensland University of Technology) and/or Dr Georg Weiller (Australian National University) and located at the university of your principal supervisor. We are looking for candidates with Honours in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or Molecular Biology, and knowledge of Bayesian Statistics, Bioinformatics, and/or Computational Biology would be desirable.
Rural Tourism and Farm Diversification: An Analysis of Farmers as Entrepreneurs
A full-time MPhil/PhD funded studentship is available in the Lancashire Business School. The studentship is tenable up to 3 years (subject to satisfactory progress) with an expected commencement date of 1 July 2008. The studentship will cover the cost of tuition fees at UK/EU and Overseas rates plus a maintenance based grant (currently £12,600 per annum).
This project critically appraises the nature and extent of the entrepreneurial skills, activities and needs of farmers as providers of rural tourism products and experiences, locating the analysis within contemporary rural development and diversification policies. Its purpose is to develop a model of successful entrepreneurship skills and strategies for farm diversification into tourism as a basis for developing appropriate rural development and diversification policies.
